Male short term co-workers

Co-Worker / Vocational

Minimum Age 18

Duration Minimum 1 year

We are seeking five male co-workers to join us here in Ballytobin for a minimum of one year. Ballytobin is a therapeutic life-sharing Camphill Community where we live and work with young and older adults with special needs, some with severe to profound disabilities. We live and work together in 5 house communities in and around the beautiful Ballytobin estate which is in the green rolling hills of Co. Kilkenny in the south of Ireland. The life and work are intense and the days are long, but the experience can be rich and rewarding, and lots of fun too if you are open to the challenge! Your main taks would be to learn how to provide good care for one of our adults with disabilities, and to become their friend and helper within the house community. Other daily work takes place in a number of areas: the home (cleaning, cooking, laundry and caring for the home) the land (farm and vegetable/fruit garden) in workshops (bakery, woodwork, and weaving)- and we have a busy cultural life with seasonal festivals, sunday services, and many meetings which you can attend, and we are strongly committed to the Anthroposophical roots of Camphill. Numerous therapies take place in our therapy centre, including physiotherapy, art therapy, eurythmy movement therapy and rhythmical massage. If you would like to join us please get in touch!

Good spoken English is essential, and a good understanding of English.

Summer Volunteers to help our Garden Team

Co-Worker / Vocational

Minimum Age 18

Duration Minimum 3 months

We are seeking volunteers to help us in our large organic fruit and vegetable garden this summer, starting at the beginning of May (although it would also be possible to start at the beginning of June or July) ideally staying for two or three months, but not longer.

In the Summer the garden work in Ballytobin intensifies and since there is a lot more to be done, we need extra help - would this interest you? You would work full time in our garden, as a member of our garden team, and under the guidance of our head gardener. The team also includes members who have special needs, so it is a fully integrated team. Your day's work would start at approximately 09:15 in the garden, and then continue until the evening with a break for lunch. You would live with us in one of our 'life-sharing' house communities, where we live together with people who have disabilties, some quite profound, and you would have a direct experience of Camphill's life and work because of this, even though you would not play a role in the care-work that we do. There will be extra tasks too, for sure, such as helping to make breakfast in your house community, or watering the vegetable plants on a Sunday, when the gardener is off.

Each Saturday you would be free, and would receive some pocket money to spend on this day off - there are many nice things to do and see in the Kilkenny area.

An enthusiasm for garden work, and for working hard as part of a team, are essential.

Enthusiasm for outdoors work, and for hard work!

A good level of English

The ability to listen and carry out the Gardener's instructions

The ability to work as part of a team

Spring/Summer Short-Term Volunteers

Co-Worker / Vocational

Minimum Age 18

Duration Minimum 3 months

We are looking for some energetic and enthusiastic volunteers to join us for the busy Spring and Summer months to help support our house communities. Your role would be interesting and you would have varied tasks which would help support the day-to-day running of our houses - for example helping us to prepare and cook meals with fruit and vegetables fresh from our organic garden; helping with cleaning and laundry, and jumping-in where needed. You would need to be flexible and happy to do jobs that you may never have done before!

You would live in one of our busy, homely and fully integrated 'life-sharing house communities' where we live alongside the people with special needs that we care for, and you would be able to participate fully in the life of our community. Ballytobin has a strong and busy cultural life, with daily gatherings in our community hall, weekly concerts, and regular public concerts given by well-known musicians. We prepare and celebrate seasonal festivals together also, and everyone plays their part in this.

You would not be responsible for the care of a person with special needs - this is carried out by volunteers and staff who make a commitment for a year or longer, and who can provide real stability. However you would live with us together, and have a very real experience of our way of life, and provide us with important help at this busy time of the year!

We look forward to hearing from you, and if you wish to find out more about living and working in Ballytobin, please do look at our page on Volunteering.

Good spoken English is essential.

We would be willing to offer places to volunteers wishing to come for a minimum of two months, but not less.
